Officially inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1988, this remarkable medieval enclave is one of the best-preserved fortified cities in Europe. Behind its imposing walls lies a layered blend of Gothic, Byzantine, and Ottoman legacies, where every stone street and carved emblem tells a story of conquest, coexistence, and resilience. A Living Fortress: Fortifications and Gates Medieval City of Rhodes Stretching over 4 kilometers, the city walls of Rhodes were not decorative—they were built to survive siege and time. Fortified by the Knights of St. John in the 14th and 15th centuries, the massive ramparts are reinforced by bastions, towers, and a dry moat that still surrounds them today. Visitors entering through gates like the Gate of St. Athanasius, D’Amboise Gate, or the Gate of St. John cross thresholds once guarded day and night by armed sentinels. Each gate has its own character. The D’Amboise Gate, for example, is flanked by two imposing round towers and leads directly toward the Street of the Knights. Meanwhile, the Gate of the Arsenal opens discreetly toward the harbour, once used by merchants and patrols. These entrances weren’t just functional—they were also symbolic, declaring power and order to all who passed. Knights, Ottomans, Italians, and modern travellers have all passed beneath its pointed arch, yet this portal spent four entire centuries bricked up after Suleiman the Magnificent sealed his 1522 victory. Today, the gate—often called Saint Francis Gate because of the Italian cathedral nearby—offers one of the most atmospheric entrances to the walled city. This guide retraces its turbulent past, highlights the medieval details still visible, and helps you visit and photograph the site with insight. A Brief Timeline of the Gate Gate of St Athanasius The Gate of St Athanasius was constructed in 1441–1442 under Grand Master Jean de Lastic, and reinforced in 1487 by Pierre d’Aubusson, whose cross still decorates the gate. It was a functional portal that connected the moat system with internal roads, positioned between two major defensive lines near the powerful D’Amboise Gate. During the siege of 1522, it became a tragic landmark. When Ottoman forces finally broke through the western defenses, it was through this gate that Suleiman’s Janissaries entered the city. To mark his victory, the sultan ordered it sealed “so that no other invader could repeat the conquest the same way. ” And so it remained—closed for 400 years, its arch hidden behind solid masonry. Located at a commanding position near the Palace of the Grand Master, the church embodied both religious devotion and political symbolism. Its Gothic presence—bold, austere, and dignified—was designed to impress pilgrims and dignitaries alike. This small Gothic chapel was where the Grand Master and high-ranking knights would retreat for spiritual grounding—a quiet core within the military and administrative powerhouse of the Order. The Grand Staircase itself, constructed in rhythmic, processional form, connected the public ground floor to ceremonial and religious functions above. As visitors ascend past high-set windows and broad stone balustrades, they move from the secular to the sacred. This architectural journey mirrors the knights’ dual commitment to earthly duty and divine purpose—a narrative made physical in the path from fortress stone to the intimate silence of the chapel. Gothic Serenity and Heraldic Symbols Church of St Catherine in the Palace The chapel’s architecture follows Gothic principles—ribbed vaults, pointed arches, and elevated ceilings that guide the eye and spirit upward. Its simplicity was intentional, reflecting the Order’s vow of humility. Faded frescoes still cling to sections of wall, portraying saints or biblical episodes meant to inspire and instruct. The altar, once lit by candlelight and framed by stone reliefs, would have faced east, aligning with Latin tradition. Standing atop the ruins of a Christian church near Socratous Street, the mosque was commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, whose victory marked a profound shift in the island’s spiritual and political identity. More than a monument, it was a statement—of triumph, permanence, and imperial grace. The mosque served not only as a place of worship but also as a visible reminder that Rhodes had entered a new chapter under Ottoman stewardship. Architectural Grandeur and Symbolism of Suleymaniye Mosque in Rhodes Suleymaniye Mosque in Rhodes The mosque’s layout and appearance speak the language of imperial architecture. Originally crowned with a large central dome flanked by two smaller domes, the structure evokes the classical Ottoman style seen in Istanbul. Its minaret, which once soared above the Old Town’s skyline, was damaged and later rebuilt during the Italian occupation. While similar in form to the great mosques of Suleiman’s capital, the Suleymaniye Mosque in Rhodes adapts its imperial vocabulary to the scale of a Mediterranean outpost. Its smaller footprint and use of local stone give it a distinctly Rhodian identity, merging grandeur with geographical context. The mosque was built during a time when the island had moved beyond conquest and into the rhythm of everyday governance, allowing for religious buildings like this one to take root in residential districts. Tucked between busy market lanes and quiet backstreets near Arionos Square, the Mehmet Agha Mosque in Rhodes speaks softly to those who pass. Built in the early 19th century, it reflects the quieter phase of Ottoman life on the island, when the once-dominant empire had settled into routine governance and religious expression. Unlike the grand imperial mosques of Istanbul, Mehmet Agha’s design is simple: a prayer hall, an elegant stone minaret, and an entrance courtyard enclosed by low walls. But in that simplicity lies clarity. This was a mosque for daily devotion, not ceremony. Its proportions are human, its ornamentation restrained, and its architectural language deeply rooted in tradition. Architectural and Cultural Notes Mehmet Agha Mosque in Rhodes Inside the mosque, the prayer hall was once adorned with simple geometric motifs and Quranic inscriptions, reflecting a restrained yet spiritual atmosphere. Built in the 16th century following the Ottoman conquest of Rhodes, this public bathhouse became one of the most important social and cultural institutions of the Islamic community on the island. "Yeni" means "new" in Turkish, distinguishing it from earlier Byzantine or medieval bathhouses. But in practice, it continued an ancient tradition stretching back to the Romans and Byzantines—cleansing of the body as both a spiritual act and a communal ritual. For centuries, steam and silence filled its domed chambers, where townspeople came not only to bathe but to rest, reflect, and reconnect. Architectural Anatomy of the Yeni Hammam in Rhodes Yeni Hammam in Rhodes The layout of the Yeni Hammam follows the classical Ottoman tripartite design: the cold room (soyunmalık) for undressing and relaxation, the warm room (ilıklık) for transition, and the hot room (hararet) for intense steam and bathing. Inside, you'll find stone massage platforms, star-shaped openings in the domes to let in natural light, and thick walls that preserved the internal climate. Its origins trace back to antiquity, but the community flourished after 1492, when Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain found refuge here. Over the centuries, the Jewish community of Rhodes became deeply integrated into the island’s economy, language, and cultural fabric. Flourishing through trade, crafts, and education, it developed a distinctive Ladino-speaking identity with strong ties to the broader Mediterranean world. Despite its prosperity, the community faced moments of disruption—none more devastating than the deportation of July 1944, when nearly 1,700 members of the Jewish population were sent to Auschwitz. Only a small number survived. What remains today is both a tribute and a memorial, honouring a community that once thrived in these very streets. The Kahal Shalom Synagogue Jewish Quarter of Rhodes At the heart of La Juderia stands the Kahal Shalom Synagogue, built in 1577 and still in use during special services. In 1914, under Italian rule, the building was carefully restored and transformed into the island’s archaeological museum. Here, civic life and spiritual reverence met in stone. Adjacent to the temple, the Hellenistic Stoa, built in the 3rd century BCE, offered shade and symmetry—a gathering place for intellectual exchange and communal identity. Beneath every vaulted gate and columned ruin lies an older, radiant chapter—one shaped not by sword and cross, but by wisdom, wealth, and artistic excellence. During the Hellenistic era, Rhodes blossomed into a sovereign city-state that balanced martial strength with cultural refinement. Its leaders mastered diplomacy with powers like Ptolemaic Egypt, safeguarded sea lanes with a formidable navy, and established laws—such as the Rhodian Sea Law—that became models across the Mediterranean. But it was not only governance that thrived. Philosophers lectured in open-air forums, sculptors turned marble into motion, and architects reshaped the skyline with temples, stoas, and theatres. Trade flowed easily through its harbours; ideas moved even faster. A Glimpse into the Golden Age Colossus of Rhodes Rhodes emerged as a maritime republic of real influence during the Hellenistic period, particularly after the unification of its three ancient cities—Lindos, Ialysos, and Kameiros—in 408 BC. It was the ceremonial axis of the Hospitaller world, a physical line that connected the Order’s core values: piety, service, and command. From the healing wards of the great hospital near the harbour to the administrative summit of the palace, the Street of the Knights carried processions that stitched daily life to ritual: brothers in armour marching at dawn, foreign dignitaries under escort, wounded pilgrims moved gently uphill to prayer or rest. Every footfall echoed with purpose. Each auberge that flanked the street represented a different Langue of the Order—France, Auvergne, Aragon, Italy, England, Germany, and Castille-León—creating a corridor of carved heraldry, political weight, and cultural pride. Flags once flew here. Lanterns burned through the night. The very stone façades bore witness to quiet diplomacy and martial command alike. It is a stone witness to the shifting tides of power, trade, and belief that have shaped the island for over five centuries. Opened in the mid-15th century by the Knights Hospitaller, it once served as both a controlled point of access and a backchannel for movement between the fortified city and the outside world. Through its arch passed merchants from Levantine ports, couriers bearing papal seals, Ottoman forces following their long siege, and later Italian engineers reshaping the old quarter to suit modern visions. From 1319 to 1798, the Order was divided into eight distinct Langues (or Tongues), each representing a major European language and region. These included: Auvergne, France, Provence, Aragon, Italy, Germany, England, and later Castille–León–Portugal. Each Langue served as a cultural and operational division within the Order, with its own leadership, responsibilities, and architectural headquarters known as auberges. These Langues allowed the Knights to maintain internal order, delegate responsibilities, and reflect the geopolitical realities of medieval Europe. While it is widely renowned as the headquarters of the Knights Hospitaller from 1309 onwards, its roots go much deeper into the ancient and Byzantine eras. The Ancient Temple of Helios The site of the Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes is steeped in millennia of architectural evolution, beginning as a revered sanctuary dedicated to Helios, the Sun God. Helios, a prominent figure in Rhodian mythology, was considered the divine protector of the island, and it was believed that he watched over Rhodes from his chariot in the sky. According to legend, Rhodes was born from the union of Helios and the nymph Rhodos, making the island inherently connected to the sun god.
